SWEET INVADERS
July 8 –
September 20, 2022

Werner Widmer’s extraordinary love for sugar cubes has gained him wide recognition. His proficiency to melt visual and tactile elements is only excelled by the unnumbered work steps that are needed to create these images of sugar. Trained as an industrial designer he often uses repetitive graphic elements in his motifs.

Space Invaders is an arcade video game created by Tomohiro Nishikado and released in 1978. It was originally manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan, and was later licensed for production in the United States. Space Invaders is one of the earliest shooting games and the aim is to defeat waves of aliens with a laser cannon to earn as many points as possible.

Werner Widmer’s Sweet Invaders is based on the famous Space Invaders and picks up the simple visuals of the first generation computer games. Pixel by pixel, sugar cube by sugar cube he puts together the game and creates an image that touches pop-art and relates to arte povera at the same time.
